Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Prepare Your Ingredients:
    • Choose a sturdy whole wheat or multigrain bread. Avoid thin sandwich bread, which can become soggy.
    • Grate the 1 ½ cups of sharp cheddar  cheese yourself from a block. For an extra twist, you can mix in some smoked cheddar for a deeper, more complex flavor.
    • Slice the 1 medium tomato thinly. Pat the slices lightly with a paper towel to remove any excess moisture.
  2. Assemble the Sandwich:
    • Lay out two slices of bread. Evenly divide half of the shredded cheese between the two slices.
    • Arrange a few tomato slices on top of the cheese.
    • Drizzle a small amount of  Worcestershire sauce over the tomatoes. (Alternatively, you can spread a thin layer on the inside of the bread.) Add a pinch of freshly ground black pepper if you’d like.
    • Top with the remaining cheese and place the second slice of bread on top to complete the sandwich.
  3.  Grill the Sandwich:
    • Spread softened butter (or a thin layer of mayonnaise) evenly on the outside of each slice of bread.
    • Heat a nonstick skillet or frying pan over medium heat. Place the assembled sandwich in the pan and gently press down with a spatula.
    • Cook for 3–4 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is completely melted and gooey. Adjust the heat as needed to prevent burning.
  4. Serve and Enjoy:
    • Remove the grilled cheese from the pan and let it rest for 1 minute before slicing.
    • Cut the sandwich diagonally or into halves and serve it warm. This grilled cheese is fantastic on its own or paired with a bowl of tomato soup.
